Water
By 2050 there is a shortage of 22.000.000 km² of Farmland.
More than 70% of the Earth’s surface consists of water.
Then it is self-evident to grow food on the water in the future.

Food
Worldwide, fresh food is no longer self-evident. Demand for healthy products is growing with the growth of the world’s population.
We want to make healthy and sustainable food available for everyone.
We want to make healthy and sustainable food available for everyone.
The concept
The basis of the concept are modular, socially produced floating objects, consisting of durable materials.
These are interconnected for endless possibilities.
In this way, foodproduction takes place on water.
The unused water area is now used in a meaningful way.

Flaoting Food Farms on Channels, Rivers and Lakes waters can provide large cities of fresh and sustainable food. It gives a special atmosphere in the city and is a separate experience for the residents. In addition, it is an additional “Green Long” in the city that improves the city climate and reduces CO2 emissions.

The Floating Food Farm concept can be introduced in all countries with Rivers and Lakes, and the expertise can also be used to improve the buoyancy of existing floating islands in countries where food is already on water. The concept is also suitable for some areas that regularly flood.

Countries and Cities at Sea can be provided with fresh food that is supplied from Floating Food Farms floating for the coasts.
“Consider, for example, A city like Singapore with little farmland where prices for agricultural products are high “, says Marcel Vijn (researcher City Land Relations at the Wageningen UR)
Design
The basis of the design consists of natural resources (where water is the most important component) so that it can be produced in as sustainable a way as possible.
The water surface is the carrier of the Floating Food Farm.
The food is grown in water, with no earth to be used.
The ability to use the Aquaponics system (and to grow the food more sustainable) is being investigated
Behind the idea
SDE and Nexus Product Design consider water space as unused space and have developed the Floating Food Farm concept

SDE (Stichting Drijvende Eilanden / Floating Islands Foundation)
The expertise that the SDE has built in recent years, with the construction of Floating Airpop Objects, produced by “Islanders” (people with a distance to the labour market) is used as the basis for the Floating Food Farm concept.

Nexus product design has developed creative brand and design strategies in collaboration with international companies since 1986. The Flaoting Food Farm concept is being developed in collaboration with partners in structure, design and architecture.

We’ll do it first
The prototype in Lelystad is the first ever successful test of growing food on freshwater in the outside air. Read the article from the Dutch science magazine ´Technisch Weekblad´ here.
Harvest party
On 31.08.2017 we celebrated the practical test of growing food on floating islands with a harvest party. Wageningen University & Research presented successful results and Brownies & downieS created very tasty dishes with it.
The first meal
Enjoy these fresh harvested veggies of Floating Food Farm. Grown on water in water and absolutely clean, free from slugs, diseases and plant stress. The first meals with paksoi and endive were very tasty.

Floating Food Farm in Boten.nl special
Boten.nl presents floating food farm in their special ‘at home on water’ in issue 02.2017.
The first steps
Master students and scientists at Wageningen UR are researching the possibilities of food production on floating islands. The group separates is urban and marine environment.
Partners
There has been an international collaboration consisting of Designers, Scientists and Students of the Wageningen UR, Engineers (including RHDHV), (Landscape) Architects, Representatives of Agricultural Organizations, Business and Social Sector. Through this collaboration, the special concept Floating Food Farm has been structured.
